Message and they impact sound characteristics significantly. Pipe size is also important as it governs gas flow speeds. My Borla w/ cats was mellow and relatively quiet. W/O cats there is a distinct and rather loud hollow rumble off idle up to about 2500. Also resonators have an very important role. Borla has a large resonator w/ with a relatively small muffler. Some systems run the opposite, using smaller cans and bigger mufflers. To be quite honest, you really have to listen to other cars and find the sound you like. Even sound clips are only good at identifying the raspiness, not the overall tonal qualities. gordo
